Frequently Asked Questions

Q. How long has the club been around?
A. The club was founded in 1983 with the adult men’s team.  The youth section of the club was officially formed in the fall of 2000.

Q. Where are home games played?
A. Currently, home games are played at the following field locations: Concordia University, Grace Bible Church, Huron High School, Pioneer High School, Saline High School, The University of Michigan’s Elbel Field and Mitchell Field.

Q. How young do kids start and what programs are offered?
A. We offer instructional clinics for kids four and older throughout the year. These clinics are available to any member of the community.  During the fall and spring we collaborate with neighboring organizations to offer a Youth Developmental League providing a competitive environment with limited travel for kids five to eight years old.

Q. Which leagues are available for competition?
A. Youth Developmental League (YDL), Ann Arbor United House League, Great Lakes Soccer League (GLSL), Michigan State Premier Soccer League (MSPSL) and Western Suburban Soccer League (WSSL).

Q. What is the difference between the leagues?
A. House league games are played in one location (Ann Arbor) with competition among four to six teams per age group.  YDL games are played in two locations (Ann Arbor and Dexter) with competition among four to six teams per age group.  GLSL, WSSL and MSPSL games are played in multiple locations (roughly 20 min to 1 hr commute times). The level of competition increases as you move from Youth Developmental to Recreation to Premier level teams.

Q. How long are the seasons?
A. The spring season starts in mid-April and ends in mid-June.  The fall season starts in late August and ends in late October.  The indoor sessions are optional sessions for the club teams and they run from November through April.  Teams also participate in tournaments during the fall and spring.  Teams decide on the number of indoor sessions and tournaments.

Q. How many times per week do teams practice?
A. In general, teams practice two times per week.  Some of the recreation teams practice once per week while some of the more competitive teams will practice three times per week.  Information will be provided by each team regarding their practice schedule.

Q. Where do teams practice?
A. Many teams rent field space at Concordia University for its practices.  Other teams rent field space from the Ann Arbor Public Schools as well as the Ann Arbor Parks and Recreation department.  Practice time and location are recommended by the coach and manager.

Q. What’s involved with becoming a member?
A. There is a tryout process for select and premier level teams.  Coaches of the respective teams conduct these sessions to find the players who are best suited to their teams.  Details about the player (previous/current soccer experience) will be very helpful.  Please contact us at: info@annarborunited.net for more information.

Q. How much does it cost to become a member?
A. New members to Select and Premier Teams pay a one time membership fee of $60.  Annual cost for travel teams will range from $700 to $1000.  This range will vary depending on coaching fees and tournaments.  Annual cost for House and Developmental teams will be around $350. 

Q. How are payments made to cover the fees for the year?
A. Fees for the year are split between the fall and spring seasons and are due a couple months prior to each season.

Q. Is financial support available?
A. Financial support is available to families most in need and are geared primarily towards the club registration fees.

Q. Where can the registration forms be found?
A. Registration forms can be found under the Forms tab on the Home page.  Coaches and managers may also distribute these forms to you.

Q. Where should registration paperwork and payment be submitted?
A. Paperwork and payment for team registration should be submitted to the coach or manager.  Other paperwork or payments should be mailed to: 7184 Fielding St, Ypsilanti, MI 48197. 

Q. When and where are tryouts?
A. Tryouts for each soccer year begin around June 15.  Specific details including dates, times and location for each age group can be found via the  link on our home page. Or click the link below.

Q. What should be taken to the tryouts?
A. You should bring a ball, water bottle, shin guards and soccer cleats.  You will need to bring a parent or guardian to sign in.

Q. How many tryout sessions are there and how many should the players attend?
A. There are two sessions per age group and gender.  It is highly recommended that the players attend both sessions to offer coaches additional opportunities to evaluate the talent and contribution of the players to the respective teams.

Q. Are tryouts for an older age group teams allowed?
A. Tryouts for an older age group team are allowed.  However, we strongly recommend playing within your current age group.

Q. Are there any opportunities to join a team after tryouts are conducted?
A. There are opportunities to join a team if you miss the tryouts, but it would depend on availability of roster spots for the respective teams.

Q. How long does it take to receive the results from the tryouts?
A. Everyone should be notified within 72 hours of the last session for that age group.

Q. If the family is not notified within 72 hours, what is the next step?
